Mauby, Looen Teas' premiere tea beverage, is inspired by my upbringing in a family from Panama, with roots in Barbados and other Caribbean nations. In fact, the company name, Looen, is derived from my maternal grandmother's name. The creation of Looen Teas is very much an ode to Granny. When I make mauby, I think about Granny, the family we were when she was here, and the culture that she passed on to us.
I also think about all of the mauby women who came before. In the mid 1900s, women sold mauby from large kettles that they balanced on their heads as they walked the streets and countryside of Barbados. These women and early entrepreneurs are my inspiration today as I launch my own company, Looen Teas.
